Cedar
|
Our suppliers of Western red cedar treat its supply as
renewable and sustainable. They are all involved in closely managed
international programs that control its cutting as well as its
reforestation.
-
Cedar is a very durable softwood that is
naturally resistant to decay.
-
Cedar is a unique wood with a beautiful natural
aroma, is a straight grained stable wood with an exceptional
appearance.
-
It weathers to a lovely silver grey, but if
chosen is an excellent wood to stain or paint.
-
Cedar has a low density and is a pleasure to
work with. It is very responsive to gluing, planning and
sanding. Cedar shrinks and swells very little and as a result
has a high resistance to warping, twisting and cracking.
-
Cedar has a high acoustic value, and also has
very good fire resistance ratings.
-
Cedar used for outdoor construction has a very
long and successful history in North America.
If cedar is your preference we feel you will be
pleasantly surprised by its afford ability and find it a very cost
effective choice.

Pressure Treated Lumber
|
Pressure Treated Lumber is most commonly an (S.P.F)
spruce, pine and fir mix. Over the last 30 years wood treated
with (C.C.A) copper, chromium and arsenic has been very
effective in deterring rot , decay and insect attack therefore
increasing the durability of large quantities outdoor wood.
In recent years there has been a growing public
sensitivity to some of the chemical content in treated lumber,
namely arsenic and chromium. This has lead to the development of
a new chemical treatment in lumber. At Forest we now use lumber
with an advanced and environmentally friendly treatment
process. "A C Q treated lumber" has a very similar appearance
to the original CCA lumber as it weathers. Forest Fence & Deck
Co Ltd uses "A.C.Q" treated lumber for complete fence and deck
projects, and almost always uses this lumber for the
sub-structure of all its deck projects. |

Exotic Hardwoods |
|
At Forest we have worked successfully with two
sub-species of South American hardwood : Pau lope and Ipe.
(specifically with decking and Arbor/trellis installations). These
hardwoods are generically known as "Ironwood". All criteria in their
description and specification are very similar. Unlike Pau lope, Ipe
may be susceptible to the occasional knot and have a slightly lower
value in strength. These hardwoods are very resistant to rot,
insects, UV, any splintering and has a class A fire rating. Some
sources class these woods as the finest outdoor woods. They are
approximately 5 times harder than more readily available cedar, pine
and spruce.
The governments of Brazil and Guyana harvest Pau
lope using a "sustained yield managed forestry" approach. The
preservation and maintenance of the rain forest is of great
importance. In a very complicated political situation; many experts
feel that giving an increased economic value to the forest will
actually reduce the slash/burn and clear that some local populations
still practice to give them what turn out to be short lived
agricultural land.

Composite Decking |
|
Trex is the composite we have chosen to use at Forest.
Trex is not a plastic lumber . It is a wood polymer made from
recycled plastics and waste wood fiber (using no virgin wood). The material
split is roughly even, and the plastic actually surrounds the wood protecting
it.
Trex is very durable and does not require any sealants or
stains. It comes in an increasing number of natural tones. It does not split,
splinter or warp. It is resistant to rot and termites. It is not slippery when
wet and can be painted if you so choose.
Trex is not a structural one for one replacement for wood and
therefore cannot be used for beams and joists.
